So I signed the green card application with a big4 in 2017, with a clause about giving the cost associated with filling the application back if I leave early.

I guess, they are asking you the cost approved i-140 and not the GC.
Please pay them, or they can cancel the green card. As a fellow immigrant, I would recommend not to take a chance with the green card process.
Dude just pay it. Your inner voice has already told you it’s the right thing to do. You’re just looking for justification to override that inner voice on fishbowl.

Ok, it never happens at EY so take the name out. I know Deloitte and PwC have that policy and you better way to avoid any legal hassle. Since you signed so it won’t hold in court and you will eventually lose
How much are they asking you to pay back?

You read and signed the agreement with them so its best to honor it.
My point is I asked them to stop the process when I got my gc last year and they never communicated that I will have to pay it back after that.
If you got your GC last year and you informed them about that last year, then it looks like your i140 was already approved when you informed them to stop the process. This means they must have spent the money for i140 approval which they are asking you to pay back. Seems fair to me. If i140 was already approved, there was nothing else they could do. Lawyer and DOL/USCIS are not going to refund their money just because you got your GC some other way.
