So, I'm 5'1, which means about 80% of these kids are taller than me by seventh grade. Do you have any idea how hard it is to try to look intimidating when you're staring up at a 13 year old?

I'm the same height, and all my students joke that I'm the "scariest" teacher despite my height because I'm tough. Well, I have to be tough in order to account for the height!

Yup, but it hasn’t stopped me yet.

like

5' checking in! What I lack in height, I make up for in "the look" 😂 Though I don't love having to ask my students to reach things off the top shelf for me.

likefunny

Here’s a tidbit I learned-when a taller student is standing up, just raise your eyes up instead of your head. That’s more intimidating

It’s not about height. It’s about rules, consequences, and follow through.

As an adult I've come to know the women of shorter stature as those one has to worry more about. Some of the most intimidating women I've ever known have been 5'0" or shorter.

Maybe middle school is where that lesson is cemented.

I’m 6’1” and weigh 210. As principal of a high school earlier in my career, I met students bigger and stronger than me! In short, you need something besides size to achieve your goals. I suggest it starts with building positive relationships with the students. They will want to perform for you because of who you are, and not because of your professional title!

likesmart

I did not say building relationships solves ALL problems. I did say we need something else besides our size, as we do encounter students bigger and stronger than we are as male and female educators. As a matter of fact, most female teachers are smaller that most high school students and they enjoy a huge matter of success, as their size is not intimidating to the students. They are obviously doing something positive that works! But, by your question, I could tell you are from Illinois.

Little ppl can be very scrappy if they need to be. And, that’s a high compliment. Lol

like

You never mess with the small bouncer at the club. Just sayin'

like

I can tell you are NOT from Illinois!!😉😂

I am 5’3. I rarely come across a student who is shorter than me. So I understand your pain. We have to do what we have to do to make us look tough lol

like

Yes I do, even though I teach Pre-K. I am 4'10".

like

Why do you want to intimidate your students?

like

Ahhhh the best question!!!

I have the opposite problem. I'm 6' and I teacher preschool. The preschool chairs and table are tough to sit at.

I'm 5'6" and I teach in a high school. Some students are taller. Some are shorter. There have been a lot of good suggestions in this post, though. Yes, getting to know your students and creating positive relationships helps, but, with the tough kids, sometimes you have to break through those walls first. Establish firm rules with consequences and enforce them with relentless consistency. Students may not say it, but they like boundaries, and they realize you care when you set them and enforce them relentlessly and consistently. The look also works. Quite often, asking them two questions, gets the behavior I want. "What are you doing?" and "What are you supposed to be doing/"

I’d get that fixed for you in a matter of hours! That is nonsense!
