It's not your client but your director that's gonna help your career progression in pwc. Your job is to make your boss look good.
Accenture 1 has it. The FIRM is a machine. It cares about the Client far more than the Director. Build the client relationship. That's all that matters. If your Director is pivotal for your success with client, show digression, keep them in the loop if you have to and escalate to MD/Partner/Account Lead - if you see them becoming net negative to the client-relationship. Deliver and demonstrate you're there for the client, their mission and success. Your firm should support you and give you the tools for success. If the Director is not part of the solution, seek to KT, mitigate or rotate out. Some people aren't good fits into some environments, we all know that. But you might not know what madness or stupidity this director is saving you from. Careful you don't dispose of your best shield and ally before trouble and, FFS, manage upwards - do retrospectives everyday, checkin, refresh what you are hearing back to each other. If you're part of a line of miscommunication, perhaps you're part of the problem. Both of you may be seeing two parts of the same equation but you've ended up working at cross purposes. Align, educate and inform. If the Director is still not up for the task, escalate and get someone who is going to 'get' the client and support you better doing their work. Let us know what happens.
100% agree on making boss look good
If your client likes you more than your director for obscure/political reasons, support your team; it'll pay off in the end. If your client likes you more because your director is a bitch, go with the client. I've had nasty managers that my client hated as much as I did, and the positive feedback I received from them plenty outweighed anything my manager had to say. Happy client = happy firm = yay on you.
This is a tricky one based on your director. You can make some look good, politic, get something back. But others are insecure, will just be jealous and possible even blame you. Be careful.
Ask the director for a favor, people like people more that they do favors for. Ben Franklin proved it
Sounds so like how my boss was kicked out of his last project
Great advice all! Will keep you updated
Yup, manage the firm relationship first.
That was my thought
