I got shortlisted for very competitive roles, had the screeners and then both times - the recruiters came back to say that they are not discounting me altogether but want to pursue other candidates “that better fit what they are looking for” …I’m clearly qualified. V5 firm experience, relevant in-house experience and T7 law school. Idk man, don’t want to be that guy but at this point I feel like there’s certainly some discriminatory undertone to this…but maybe not.

I handleda very difficult and convoluted succession for a black family. My client was astute and intelligent. We got along great. His family was difficult. Willfully ignorant.

I am so tired of getting mixed up with the other black female associate at my firm. Sigh.

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.

With all that is going on, has anyone seen any positive changes in their organization?

Anybody having to participate in/listen to discussions at work regarding the recent events at the Capitol where your views are in contrast to others in the discussion? If so, how have you handled this?

Does anyone feel like it’s difficult to gain acceptance and find allies when you’re a POC? I have attended happy hours, social events, and lunches, but I am not getting the same amount of traction as the other new lawyers who are white. Don’t know whether I should keep trying or just give up. Also don’t know whether it’s my personality or people at the firm. 😢
