Solos,

How long have you been practicing? What was your income during the first three years? and what did you do differently to increase your income?

Watching this. My husband has been solo for about 18 months after being in public interest for 15+ years. Last year he got a great commercial case that brought in 80% of income for the year. Looking to replicate!

5 years practicing, 8 months as a solo, have made about $200k so far. No changes to anything. Hit the ground running. Immigration / crim defense / civil rights. Never spent a dollar on marketing; strong word of mouth referral network amongst both clients and attorneys.

Solo 2 years this month. On my taxes I made $900 my first year but in reality it was $12k super part-time (think less than 10 hours a week). My second year with deductions I'll have a loss but in reality it's actually about $30k, still super part time. I do estate planning, probate and mediation. My practice pays for phone, internet, printer ink, half of meals when I go to dinner with attorney friends or clients. I claim mileage for anything remotely work related. A percentage of my utilities and household expenses is deducted too. I have a great CPA who keeps me legal on taxes. I don't advertise. The only appointments I take are probate GAL. I'm not making big money but it's all part of my prioritization of my family. Short term plan for a long term benefit. I'll go full time after my kid graduates high school next year. I'm using this time to boost my reputation and skills.

Do you have other supplemental income? How do you pay for living expenses? What state are you in?

Gross rev of 650k in calendar year 1. Year 2 am projecting to gross ~$1m.

I am not PI - I handle reoccurring / volume litigation matters on behalf of businesses. The secret sauce is being able to price out flat fee per matter + juggle competing jurisdiction calendars + obtain coverage counsel for court hearings as needed.

Is it too late in our lives to jump into a mortgage?

So my fiancée and I are relatively late in terms of finally landing well paying jobs and being able to save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. We’re both 36 and currently rent a 2 bedroom in NY and have a combined savings of $35,000 which she wants to use as a down payment on a condo. I kinda just wanna continue saving while renting. I also literally just started contributing to my 401K so I’m also late in the game for that too.

Living in Van. Previously lived in Toronto. Obviously rent prices are high as is cost of living. Generally go out and spend more often living in a city. Boyfriend and I on good salary but not saving much due to the above. Before we move home to our own country, we’d love to spend a year close to Vancouver where rent is cheaper, temptation is less, to save. A commute to Vancouver 1-2 times a month needs to be possible (his job). That can be a flight if it’s not crazy. Thoughts? Recommendations?

I just left my pre-seed startup that was running out of cash (we made $100,000 in revenue this year, and sunk $1m in costs). I was making $40,000 as a developer (plus 20k stock options at $1/share per year) and they refused to pay me any more money. I have 17,000 vested stock options, total number of shares at the time of my contract was 4million. I’m a bit confused about share dilution and if it’s worth it for me to buy some of my stock options… thanks in adv!

Former client( filed a bar grievance that was dismissed, sent me a demand letter that an attorney responded to on my behalf, and filed a BBB complaint against my non-BBB law firm) has now pro se filed a lawsuit against me in small claims court. Alleging misrepresentation, failure to file a lawsuit, and failure to advise during the process. I have phone logs, emails, and billing notes (all of which she has) that show she’s lying.
