Just keep going with it. If you are everything else they are looking for. many will overlook one little ding on your record. No one is perfectly ideal, and if they are, they're probably lying.
I just got an offer on the same team as a person who at a previous company, negotiated laying off my entire team sight unseen (including me) into their hiring. They worked there for under a year and are now on this new team at a new company. My layoff wasn’t performance related though. I tap danced around it in interviews. “Oh you worked at X? Do you know Y?” “Oh, no they are after my time, but I’ve heard really great things from old coworkers that are still there! Sounds like this team is lucky to have them now!” I think they didn’t want to be the villain twice. They seem nice. I still feel weird. Wishing you a tiny percent of a chance. But also, pls vaguely spill the tea now?
Have not accepted offer yet 😅 and that’s a factor.
Only a junior and already been fired? What happened?
Agree with ACD1 here. You say you've changed, but you clearly are still somewhat set in your ways. Not cool bruh.
Don't leave us hanging OP. What was the joke you made?
🥺 ugh can you pivot the conversation? I’d say anything positive possible and divert to a new topic or mutual connection. Unless that person is now working on the team you’d be joining, meh. I’d breeze past it and not sweat it
You seem very familiar. 🧐
Rising Star
Did they actually lay you off or did they fire you but call it a lay off to be nice?
Yes there is a big difference. Like M2 said above the most important piece is the eligible for rehire list.
The latter
How were they made aware of the circumstances?
Oh wow, what was the context of being laid off? Was it warranted? I don't think it's that big of a deal, the person who laid you off might have been in the wrong
The person that laid me off did not want to but was forced by higher ups. He is a good person and acted as my reference for future interviews.
You’ll definitely come up in conversation, better luck next time.

What a nice ending to a potentially bittering story!
How did they mention the person? What’s their connection?
Yikes 😅.
Just cause they know each other doesn't mean they know about you. This is a small industry and everybody knows each other. If they're interviewing you they like your resume enough to bring you in; it's possible that they know about the layoff and don't care, and your resume is strong enough otherwise.
Everybody gets let go at some point, it's super common in this fickle industry. It's not the kind of thing that'll make people write you off immediately. If you were fired for really awful behaviour the story of that behaviour can be a red flag to others, but that'd be about your behaviour, not the layoff itself.
Handle your business. If you got fired because your comedy was just too much for this person then say that you did know them, learned a lot from them, and are ready to take those learnings into this job to be a success.
But also, what was the joke this person didn’t get? Tell us.
I can’t even remember everything, hardly anything x rated. It was a little while back.
