Yeah...actually, these people do fine. Very likely they’re coasting long enough in consulting to return to industry with ‘insights’ from their time with teams like yours. They’ll make a great ton of money, if they’re motivated. Also, in my opinion, there are those who like to keep their head down and ‘do’ what they’re told & then there are others who like to look around, walk around. Personally, I learn what I need to - in order to support my team and deliver, but I’m not ashamed of the fact that I don’t ‘dive deep’ into one particular thing. I’m big picture person & I’m sure it bothers some people, but...everyone has their own career for a reason.
Don’t compare yourselves to them. You only see one side of others. You give it your best at work, and let your efforts/outcomes speak for themselves.
Whether they coast/crash should be least of your concerns.
Credit should be given to my managers, who were smart with staffing & understanding their team resources skill set well.
So, have an unproductive resource would also affect them the most, as they focus on projects P&L. Your managers can see through clearly who is productive or not.
I’m with OP on this one...I know a few of those people who call themselves generalists because they’re fakers. They literally can’t even gather requirements or learn the platform they were hired on to be an expert at so they only take on PM roles to tell others what to do because they can’t do the work...
Looks like that last comment here was deleted...said “can I ask how old you are?” Not sure what that has to do w anything. Is my observation less valid if I’m younger or more valid if I’m more senior? I don’t get it
Some deliver, others sell. Those that do neither generally don’t last long.
Those types of folks are operating in the sweet spot of employment at our firms. Without increasing the standard, that won’t change. Keep in mind these same individuals make it easier for high performers to stand out amongst the 100s or 1000s.
