The complaint is very good, but I was not very persuaded by the argument that said, in essence, “this is disturbing regardless of your politics because it could be you next, conservatives.” That’s nonsense. No one thinks President Warnock is going to target Jones Day with an illegal executive order.

Really? President AOC could declare a climate disaster national security emergency and declare each law firm that reps oil and gas to be sanctioned

A4, I disagree. In MAGAland RINO is almost as much of an insult as liberal. And all it takes to become a RINO is disagree with anything cheeto in charge says or does (even, and perhaps especially, when the disagreement is based in traditionally conservative positions/ideology).

like

SA1, nothing reasonable about that reach of an inference, you miserable troll. Cheeto was in reference to his inability to properly blend the 3 lbs of mismatched makeup he cakes on every morning.

Hooray for gambling the entire firm! Even if you win, you lost.

Thoughts on kindly asking your bridesmaids to please not give a gift? I am over the moon excited that my bridesmaids will be celebrating me and traveling for the wedding and bachelorette. I really do not want a gift from them at the wedding. Full disclosure, my fiancé and I have great paying jobs and my bridesmaids are grad students, artists, and teachers. How would you frame this? Even if they were millionaires I would not want a gift, but I don’t want it taken the wrong way.

Dear crypto and other investments,

I have come to the realization that I absolutely do not want to work for the rest of my life. I would much rather spend my time living it up with my gf and the boys, traveling the world and living my life. Therefore, I am counting on you to not be an endless disappointment and come through clutch.

Love, someone who will go full office space if you fail me.

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

Need help: I got an in house counsel offer for a venture fund. I’m a 4th year. 275 50 bonus 50 options every year. Full benefits covered work anywhere. I’m panicking this is dead end and I’ll never move on and I should stay in biglaw. Am I crazy? Am I stuck in biglaw mindset?

1st yr at a nyc v50 firm doing general transactional work. I know the lateral market for transactional lawyers is hot but not as hot for juniors. I just want a change of scenery because my current firm is bleeding good associates / not giving great training imo / and just seems small. Would lateralling this early feasible? Would it look bad on my resume?

As a first year - if you like working with a particular partner a lot, is it a good idea to just volunteer for all the work they have for you to do, or is it better to try to get a balance of different work from the practice group? Not trying to come off like Incrediboy.

Any Atomic Habit readers here? I’m brainstorming identity-based habits for two things I want to change:

-I want to bill more hours, so my goal is to become the type of person who bills at least 8 a day
-I want to drink less alcohol, so my goal is to become the type of person who drinks occasionally

Neither of these feel that helpful. Any one have suggestions for other identity-based goals that get at these changes I want to make?

Relatively “chill” practice group/firm in Chicago?

I’m in a tough spot—still waiting for conflicts to clear and out of the blue, a partner reached out regarding a project that they’ve staffed me on. They want my availability to begin working on the matter next week…how do I handle this? I haven’t given notice, but expect to do so soon…I don’t think it’s prudent to start a new matter esp. since I know I’m leaving…but I can’t turn down work with a straight face (especially because my hours are in “checked out” mode)…

I am a junior associate actively looking to lateral. I feel bad knowing I’m going to completely blindside my Partners and practice group with the two week notice whenever I get an offer. Should I tell the group that I’m looking/interested in exploring other opportunities? The firm has been great, but I’m moving to another market in which they don’t have an office.
