The long hours and intense pressure of big law are starting to wear on me. I'm seriously considering in-house, but I'm a little nervous about the change. For those of you who've made the move, how long were you at your first firm before switching?

I was in big law for 2.5 years before going in house. Best decision I’ve ever made, never going back lol

I was in biglaw for 7 years before I switched and I'm never going back. The transition is easier than you expect and I'm actually making significantly more money in-house than I was at my firm.

Agreed with this. I was in big law for 6.5 and making more now than I ever imagined. WLB isn’t always there but the majority of the time I’m 8-5

I stayed at my firm for five years before moving in-house, and I wish I had done it sooner. The learning curve was real, but the predictability of my schedule now makes such a difference. If you’re already thinking about it, it might be time.

I have worked in house as a trademark paralegal for over 20 years and love it compared to a law firm. I will never go back.

2.5 years in big law before going in house. The environment is much less stressful. The hours aren't as long. In my experience the benefits package is a lot better.

Worked Big Law as a Legal Secretary once I became a Paralegal I went I'm house immediately. After 10 years in house, I've been laid off three times since covid. I'm over being a paralegal and transitioning out.

Hi there!
Getting frustrated as a Paralegal... If I may ask, what are you transitioning to from being a Paralegal?
Thanks

It's been 7 years since the switched from law firm to in-house. No more billables, more salary increase, and you'll get your sanity back. :-)

I was in firms for about 10 years. In-house was a game changer. Do it!!! I’m so much happier now.

Same here! I just can't take it any longer! the constant stress of billing for the past nearly 20 years! I want an in-house job, but how difficult is it to find one?

I switched to in-house after 1 year as a personal injury lit paralegal. I was hired as a legal administrator which had a much lighter work load but I still did some paralegal duties like contract review and legal doc drafting.

I worked in big law or two years and then made the swtich an was wayyyyy happier. But I have friends who like big law better so I guess it really just depends.

Hey team! So I was laid off from my SDR position about a week ago. A couple months back, I had an offer for a BDR position that I ended up turning down but I really liked and connected with the manager. Is it worth it to reach out? I applied to other positions in the same company. What about reaching out to previous co workers at a different company? Not sure how to navigate this… please help. Also I’m sorry if this is the wrong bowl to post in.

It’s a total shift that would really heal my work-life balance, job satisfaction and budget. My only fear is that I would not be using the license and degree that I worked so hard for. Hi all, I’m in need of some career advice. Not sure where to direct my attention. I know that I don’t enjoy consulting, but I’m also fairly confident that I don’t like strategy. The things I enjoyed the most was getting into the customer’s head and figuring out what they value, which I think I’m pretty good at. I also enjoy working with others frequently and finding a solution together, instead of having individual workstreams. I can hold my own in front of a crowd as long as I’m confident in...

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? I’m not the decision maker, but it’s been a few weeks with very few applicants. I’m curious if there’s something hurting the firm in its search.

Currently a paralegal at a small start up financial services company been there for just a little over a year. I wear “multiple hats” but more recently I’ve done a lot of PM work and some BA work. My position title is changing soon but I’m wondering how helpful that would be for wanting to go into PM work at a tech company. Anyone have any career pivot advice? (Also I’m only 1.5yrs old in my career so I’m definitely still new, and I have previous experience as a project assistant).
