Problem is:
- Execs think such a system is a good idea and give it IT to implement
- IT makes them aware that it’s a stupid system but implements as Execs don‘t have time to review the comment
- no manager below execs is informed
- incident happens
- manager don‘t know anything
- Execs point to IT
- IT tells them I told you
- Execs don‘t want to admit it was their fault
- Execs can‘t fire IT because it actually needs more IT ressources
- no one can fire Execs
- nothing happens except for company mood being damaged
- circle repeats until Execs are replaced as low company mood impacts customer satisfaction
- circle repeats with new Execs
Oh COME ON this is NOT an AI failure. This is a automation systems failure, and automation is very different from AI. The system was designed with an inherent flaw but it didn’t “make a decision to fire” the employee.
Stop calling things AI that are literally just normal computer systems.
So, sensationalized headline. In fact, he wasn’t fired, he was a contract employee. There was an error in system and / or process whereby his contract wasn’t renewed in the employer’s system. This led to an automated cascade of issues that included cancelling building access badges, access to systems, etc.
It was not that a “machine” made some independent decision to terminate an employee’s employment.
To start, the person wasn’t fired. Not renewing someone’s employment contract is not the same as terminating employment (I.e., firing them). I’ll grant that the end outcome is conceptually the same. But the headline is clearly baiting a reader by implying that someone was terminated by AI. As others have noted, this simply is not the case.
That being said, I’m keen enough to understand that headlines like “Automation Technology Glitch Results in Non-Renewal of Contractor’s Contract” doesn’t really create clicks to sell adds, despite the fact that it’s far more accurate.
This is bad automation, not bad AI, likely from a product suite that boasted of hire to retire automation
And yayy for Linux!
How is it even an automation system failure? Isn’t it just a system doing exactly what it was designed to do, ie default action for a contract not renewed by expiry date is that it expires? The fact that nobody noticed the contract was expiring seems like a process failure, not technology.
Wow...
