I would think it will depend on the type of project(s). If you stick to strategy/architecture/SME/SO with a mix of hands on $150 should be a no brainer if not a bit more. If you settle for an engineer type role then it’ll be less since they can offshore that (regardless if they suck).
Go for the more complex roles where it’ll take all of your experience into account. Less competition.
you should probably do a proper LCAT labor rate build up to make sure your admin and Overhead expenses are accounted for.
If you are truly independent, then you can charge whatever the clients you find will pay. If you are using staffing firms to find work, it will probably be up to what the clients say they will pay when they are looking for a senior resource in one of the areas you have expertise in, and then they will take some cut of that rate.
When we have hired subcontractors, I think the most we have paid to staffing firms is probably $150/hour, but it’s usually less than that. The subs got paid for every hour they billed though, so in one case for a critical resource at a critical time he billed 60-80 hours/week.
I was an independent consultant doing product data management for $200/HR (on the side while working an unrelated full-time job).
