So sorry to hear you’re faced with this right now. We’ve all been there. I would encourage you though to think of this as fixable.
I often let agencies know when they ask me to be “off the clock” that as long as they give me advanced notice of the timeframes that they want me to be offline, there’s no problem with it. That’s just having basic regard for my time so that i can plan it otherwise. But if they expect me to be “on call” and available, then I have no choice but to bill for the time. (I can be flexible with this if they usually keep me close to 40 hours.) Similarly, if they communicated that they wanted me online and they change their mind after I’ve already shown up, that’s not ok either.
If it turns out they don’t have enough work for you for the number of hours you agreed to work, they should not be upset about you taking another assignment. It takes practice and confidence to approach it smoothly, but I would encourage you to just speak openly and professionally. There is nothing to be emotional about or afraid of. This is your livelihood, and you are there to be paid for being useful to them. If they need you to be ready and available when they need you, that is useful to them. They should pay for it. They should respond well if you communicate with them as seeking a solution that works for both of you and not just registering a complaint.
Good luck!
Was my post too long to read? Not sure how you arrived at your conclusion, unless you didn’t read it.
8 Hours minimum per day. Waiting is working and taking your time away from other jobs.
Coach
It is illegal for them to tell you not to bill. If you are there to work, you're earning. You're not on commission
And this is why I always double dip—because of nonsense like this
I’ve had some issues with this in the past. I think it’s insane to expect a freelancer to be available and not pay for their time.
Oh yeah… never.
Day rate always. If they booked you, they pay you
So this 👆is true if you want your time fully allocated they pay for a dayrate (inclusive of 8-10hrs) but if they insist on hourly just be prepared that it may not be fulltime hours. In initial conversations if it’s hourly you can ask upfront how many hours they can scope for x amount of project time then bill that.
That is illegal. Let them know you know it is illegal and ask them to send you acknowledgment of that fact in writing.

Keurig / DP tried that shit with me. Immediate cancellation.
SAME. same. Don’t worry. It happens to a lot of us!
You can charge for downtime. You need to agree to a minimum per project, week, or month.
