Basically yes. I would interpret “liability defense” as being the broader term, suggesting that the firm might have non-insurance clients, and a correspondingly broad set of practice areas. This is consistent with what you found.
I would be wary of the prospect of switching practice groups. Firms hire for need, and whatever group you land in, that’s where they will want you to stay. If you want to pivot from what you’re doing to L&E, then you should do it now.
Liability defense is not an “area”
I think the recruiter just meant they handle different types of liability matters like product defect liability and premises liability and wanted to emphasize that it is defense. You should also be wary of recruiters because there are some out there who don’t seem to be much help other than constantly messaging people positions
