PMM should not be a stressful job - I’m guessing you’re just in a stressful situation. You can dial down the stress by managing your workload and deadlines better - becoming confident in using the phrase “yes, I can deliver on that ask by the deadline. But it means something else won’t get done - I’m going to have to move delivery on [task] back a week.”
Also, I’m not sure I understand how the pay for the work doesn’t add up - are you being paid by project and the number of hours results in a poor hourly rate?
If it isn’t your thing, then better to pivot out and not waste time. I would consider other factors, though. Sometimes you do just end up at a bad place, and can have a completely different experience if you move to another company. I experienced that before. Night and day difference when I switched.
That first year in PMM is a crash course in balancing expectations, and sometimes it shows you what’s not for you, which is just as valuable and OKAY. If content’s not your thing, but you still like messaging and cross-functional work, brand strategy, product analytics, or even research ops might be worth exploring. What parts of PMM gave you energy, even on the hard days? If you’ve got the skills, pivot into biz ops, growth strategy, or program management. Those roles pay better, use the same muscles, and demand less juggling.
I was in product marketing for a few years before making the leap to owning a café, and it was honestly the best decision for my work-life balance and happiness. If you’re feeling burned out or like the pay isn’t worth the stress, there are plenty of other directions you can take. Would you try brand management or brand strategy?
What is it that is time consuming and stressful?
Is it the volume of work you're being given?
Is it managing stakeholder expectations? (This is tough and takes time to lear to manage; talk to a good project/program manager in your company to see how they do it if you don't have any fellow PMMs to ask).
I'm in the same boat. I have had a terrible experience in my first year of product marketing. My experience is the pay not worth it either as I am putting in very long days and weekends trying to stay on top of the workload. Lots of finance, data analysis, reporting, attention to detail and memorization and things are always moving - with no time to think. There is also a lot of pressure as everything for the business p&L is falling on my shoulders. While this might sound exciting or a great opportunity I didn't choose this responsibility it was forced on me after a reorg and I wish I had been able to take this on in my own time.
I'm also having a hard time figuring out what's a good fit long-term. How different is brand management? I assumed it was the same. Is this how product marketing is supposed to be?
