Charge by the day.
I’ve never been asked for hourly work, only day rates. FWIW I’m a CD, but when I was an AD it was the same. I never was offered overtime and figured the overwork into my overall rate
FAD&D OP Don't go through a recruitment agency if you can help it. They take up to 60% if what they're actually getting paid. Get in front of the creative talent manager at agencies and get what you're worth. Stalk on linked in to get names of HR, CDs, resource managers etc.
Not sure what you mean by “independent” freelance work. So you mean like when you work directly for a small business (like a local restaurant or law firm) as opposed to an agency? Most people I know who are successful doing that charge by the project rather than either hourly or day rates. For example, I ask $250 for a 500 word blog post. Keeps things simple, and you don’t have to worry about tracking your time or them arguing after the fact. Write number of revisions into the contract so they can’t keep asking more forever.
If you mean just working with agencies, they generally will ask for either your day or hourly rate. If given the option I always go with hourly so I can get OT.

I’ve never heard of hat but it makes complete sense. Thanks
If you do a day rate, check to see if you're still entitled to overtime pay over 40 hours. In some states you are.
It depends on who you’re working for. Basically, your hourly rate should be much higher than your day rate. For example, I’m $90/hour, but I’d work for $600/day.

Are you speaking about working with recruitment agencies? Or personal work?
From what I understated working with recruitment agencies for example ( creative group) they only pay you by the hour.
Unless it’s not true and you can ask for a daily rate.

Thank you that was helpful
I was referencing like local people and companies who are looking for my individual help. As apposed to working with a recruiting agency who asks for your hourly rate.
Keeping it simple and charging by the project and number of revisions makes total sense.
