Thoughts on background checks, and how long do they usually take? Is this something that can hold your application up? I've been waiting over a week, but I have no record to speak of.

It can actually take a while sometimes, even if you have a clean record. I wouldn't worry too much about it. That doesn't seem overly long yet, you'll probably hear from them soon.

Depends on what exactly they’re checking, and what’s holding them up. If they’re trying to verify employment and the company got bought / doesn’t exist / nobody is answering the number they have, it can definitely take a few weeks. But often you can provide tax records that show you worked there as an alternative.

Actual criminal background checks take a few seconds or a few minutes at most. It’s usually the other part of the check that requires humans that takes time.

Yea, if you know that you don't have a record, don't stress about it. It can take up to 10 days, depending on a variety of factors that don't have anything to do whether your BG is clear or not.

I’m so grumpy about new campus hires. Sometimes I’m judgmental (your hobby is “working on your golf swing,” really?). Sometimes I’m just exhausted by the worried earnestness. Sometimes I’m amazed that they seem to have zero useful skills, yet they’ll be making 150k easily in the not too distant future.

My dilemma… I am an injury adjuster at a carrier experiencing high inventory that’s barely manageable. A competitor offered a higher salary and manageable workload. BUT, I would like to get into underwriting. I applied for UW position w/ a different carrier and they’ve made an offer. It’s lower than my current salary and significantly lower than what I’d make by taking the first offer. Do I take the high salary and stay in claims or go for UW in hopes it will be best in long run?

Hey all, started my role as a recruiter at an agency recently and had my first placement! It was great until the candidate wants to renegotiate the base and benefits after the current company counter-offered when the candidate no longer sees the future. Any tips on what to say to bring back to focus? The current role is a Sr. Acct Receivable (less than 2yr) and going into collections specialist at a global law firm.

I’ve noticed that HR, when explaining why a candidate didn’t get the job, tend to lean on “You’re great, but we had candidates with more experience in [skill relevant to the job].” I do believe this is true in some cases, but it can’t possibly be for all of them.

HR folks — what feedback have you obscured by offering that line instead?

Have an offer from a dream company but I'll need to go in at a lower level. Knowing that I can bring a lot of value to the company (read- I know my worth), I negotiated with the hiring manager to have a level/comp review 6 months after employment. If I hit all my goals (ie, prove myself) within that time frame, I'll get a promotion and salary adjustment.
QUESTIONS:
Should this be in writing in the offer letter?
How detailed should it be? I assume I won't know what goals to set till I start...
