A5, we get it, you are Reveille’s handler, calm down lol
And Sidley will be even thirstier soon!
The reaction of the 60 year old partner who does not keep up with rankings (because most law firms don't): Texas A&M has a law school? Ohhh, you mean Texas Wesleyan?
Perceptions of law schools are earned with time, not fluctuations in annual rankings.
"The boomers haven't realized it's a good school yet" is a great argument. Checkmate. I'm going to burn my Aggie Law diploma and quit my big law job 😭
El oh El
It doesn’t matter. Employment outcomes > some ranking.
They’re not really. The rankings don’t factor in BL at all.
To anyone who thinks fluctuation in these rankings affects how firms hire, I've got a bridge to sell you...
Something like that
Lmao wild
Yeah, but more people go to big law from other schools. For the percentage of graduates getting into big law, UT is ranked 19, SMU is 29, and UH is 32. A&M wasn't in the top 50.
As always, remember to add federal clerkship stats to BigLaw stats when comparing BigLaw outcomes. FCs are much harder to get and generally any clerk could have chosen BigLaw (and in most cases, summered at a BigLaw firm and has an offer to return post-clerkship).
Otherwise, if you only look at BigLaw rates in isolation like in the link above, you see a skewed perspective on placement rates and essentially “punish” schools that are good at clerkships (which is the opposite of what an applicant should do since clerkships are more competitive and federal clerkship placement is a key distinguishing feature of the best schools).
To illustrate my point, do you really think schools like Yale, Stanford, Harvard, etc suck at BigLaw? No, they’re just really great at sending people to federal clerkships and the link doesn’t capture that.
The traditional emphasis on rankings is going to wane now that USN is starting to look at outcomes over input. UT will always be number one followed by SMU and Houston (due to alumni connections) in TX biglaw. Doubt the rankings will change anything since they no longer reflect the general quality of students.
Which school is the best for their median student might be one way to rationalize these rankings. Median at SMU, UH, Baylor and A&M are all unlikely to get biglaw. Bar passage rate, overall employment outcomes and cost matter more to more students at these schools.
I genuinely feel bad for people who will see these rankings and go to A&M over SMU/UH
I went to A&M undergrad and I regularly annoy the rest of my family with my passion for Aggie football. I would still tell a prospective 1L to go to SMU/UH over A&M law if given the option. If you get full ride at A&M versus paying for the other 2, then I’d probably say A&M
I work at sidley and I think we hire at A&M now. I don’t even know if we even go to Baylor.
Im guessing Chicago sidley hires at ND and Houston/Dallas hires at TAMU.
For everyone's info. 45/135 of the 2L class are in big law this summer. These numbers will continue or grow. This includes Sidley, V&E, Kirkland, STB, BB, Haynes & Boone, S&S... I think y'all are just a bit behind the curve (and maybe butthurt) about the changes. But it's okay! I am here for you if you need me. ♥️

A5 - a strong trajectory is great and should be celebrated, but that’s not the same as saying it’s currently #2 in Texas. Also, even if it were the #2 best school in Texas, applicants should be careful to note that this doesn’t mean it is the #2 best choice for getting Texas BigLaw, because there are many schools outside of Texas with better placement chances (and schools with better Texas BigLaw changes than even UT for that matter).
All that being said, I’m happy to see A&M’s success and I hope to see them continue to grow in the future.
A&M has higher admission statistics than those two schools.
I seriously gtg though I'll circle back to this bowl annually to say "I told you so."
Gotta change the sheets!!!
Lol
Pretty sure A&M has been No. 2 in Texas for a year or two now
^
I had no idea A&M has a law school. (Not being sarcastic. BL partner here, recently moved to one of my firm’s Texas offices.)
Regardless of what anyone thinks, A&M is going to keep climbing. They have too much damn money. They ponied up serious cash for professors, students and a building. And firms will hire in reaction to US News and the other great objective metrics of the students. It won't be stopped.
Maybe SMU should’ve ponied up some more cash?…I’ll see myself out
Usnews ranking is meaningless re: big law. The better ranking is the law.com to go to law school ranking that rank schools by big law placement
