I've had no problems. Like the previous poster I'm also naturally more conservative (though I believe in human rights) so it hasn't been a big deal for me. I wanted a cheaper place for me and my family with more land and less people and that's what I got. Personally think you get what you make of it, if you move here with a miserable attitude you'll be miserable.
I’ve loved it, no complaints other than lack of outdoors stuff to do but there is still plenty of parks to walk around at
Moved from dc to Dallas. I think it’s been okay. Socially originally from the Midwest so not too different but Dallas people are pretty flashy which gets old. Why do you need a dress on to walk your dog?
NYC > Houston and quite happy with it. Way bigger paycheck, way way larger house for a fraction of the price, shorter commute, newer buildings and infrastructure, better residential AC, easier shopping, less face time expectations at the office.
Negatives are that it’s horribly flat, hot and humid more often (although NYC gets pretty brutal in the summer too, with less AC), worse architecture, and none of the NYC “X factor” (ie world class things that make you feel awesome but honestly rarely use in your daily life, like Broadway). Shockingly small downgrade on the food scene, including at the high end.
Also moved from DC to Dallas. It’s been ok, it’s a fairly easy place to live. Paycheck has gone up tho I’m not convinced my disposable income has gone up that much what with the property taxes/utilities. Especially water - still shocked at how much higher it is. Absolutely hate the lack of public transit (and I live in a more walkable neighborhood) and driving here is honestly a nightmare. Politics have been really stressful, though I at least have a say. Not sure I see myself here long term but it’s good for now.
I’m pretty neutral. Hate the commute (but from Midwest where commutes are just so much nicer). I also think people are 50-50. Some people are really welcoming but then others are just really standoff-ish. People really value prestige and flashing things here so fair warning. Also, everywhere (I’m in Dallas) is valet which blew my mind. And oh god the tolls. Literally just got the bill for a 6 mile drive for $16🙈. I agree with others that the cost of,living definitely is higher than you’d expect because there’s a lot more nickel and dime on these extra expenses. But if you game it right you can definitely make a really good living. I didn’t find the property or sales taxes that much higher to make it meaningful. Feels like there’s a lot less regulation of things (utilities, housing, renting is really crazy and landlords are able to be slumlords). I’ve found the roads really well maintained.
