He’s right. If you don’t watch out, you may start to enjoy life and be sane

Working your ass off in your 20-30s is an easy way to guarantee a mediocre life
Depends. Some of my friends have worked hard in their 20s and 30s to retire early. Outliers surely, but they are living the good life now.
What do you prioritize and what is important to you? I was raised in a poor family so financial stability is paramount. My parents worked hard for 40+ years and I don’t hear them complain. If I can become financially independent with 10 years of hard work and provide for my loved ones then what is the problem?
Are we really taking advice on careers from 23 year olds now?
Ironic that a consultant is complaining about 23 year olds giving advice on stuff they barely know. Isn’t that the big four consulting model in a nutshell?
Chris needs to chill
Chris clearly has nothing else that excites him or interests him, and his sole driver is his career. Fair enough, but that's not for everyone.
Of course it's true. Nobody gets ahead by working exactly 40 hours a week and not going the extra mile.
Well if you want to get ahead, this mantra doesn’t work as it’s sort of the expected baseline. You’d have to assume that your colleagues are dumb (or lazy) it doesn’t give you a competitive advantage. You should really phrase it as: “Work smartER AND hardER”. Which typically requires more than 40h
There’s no question it’s easier to make sacrifices in your 20s before you have kids and a family. And that can make a big difference in career acceleration.
But everyone needs to make their own personal choice for their priorities in life.
I would argue that in your 20s you need to get good at (and be seen as good at) something you can base the next phase of your career on.
For some that will require a ton of work, others maybe not. It’s also the age when you have the greatest discretion about how to use your time, and when you’ll see some friends step on the career gas pedal, and others not.
It’s a very different kind of peer pressure 😅
Welp… guess I’m gonna have a mediocre career then. 🤷 I’ll take consolation in the fact that there’s a lot more to life than just my career.
Very true I’d say
This is poorly said, but I think is generally true. However, it’s important to consider that careers aren’t always linear. There are aspects of timing and luck that may impact careers positively/negatively.

YOLO 😈🧐
Depends on how you think about balance. I sought out things like the company softball/kickball/soccer/trivia/whatever teams in my 20s as I was in a new city and looking to meet people. Those experiences led to some ultimately forgettable people but also a strong core of friends, decades on.
If you ask me now to sign up for those things, I’d probably pass as I’d think they were on the “work” side of the work/life balance, but back then, I’d take a much different perspective.
Anyway, you do you, boo.

Work-life balance, and the enforcement of such, is what has made me an excellent leader and coworker. I consistently get rave reviews from folks on my team saying that they enjoy their work more than they ever have before because they feel valued and prioritized as humans instead of worker bees. In turn, they work better in their 40 hours. This has led to promotions and raises for me for being a good leadership member who inspires retention and results.
