I’m about to start an internship at IBM for UX Research. I’m super excited about it, and was wondering if anyone could tell me about the design culture there or how the company is for designers? So far online I’ve only heard about the company from consultants or software engineers. For more reference I’ll be working in Austin.

On big projects it’s while taking a walk, right before you go to sleep, in the shower, putting your PBJ sandwich together when insights come. Let your computer/mind work in the background.
When starting a project, I research my audience or users. It gives me ideas for best outcomes.
Usually I go directly to our target users or audience and ask them questions about themselves. Barring that, I go straight to our researchers who have the task of posing those questions to our users/audience. After gathering that data, I’ll analyze it to understand what makes our users/audience tick - motivations, pain points or problems that they’re looking to us to resolve, behavioral patterns, likes and dislikes, etc.
I do this to gain a keen understanding of the people we’re designing for, and I do it before any other step in my process so as not to inject my own biases into the design (i.e. designing for myself rather than for them). That way I’m better able to empathize for our audience/users, to advocate for their needs, and design something that will delight them.
