To any litigators questioning their competence/decision to become a lawyer like I was… I just want to let you know I’m now 6 months in house and am THRIVING.

3 years ago I made a post here about how defeated I was from getting constant (warranted) criticism about missing deadlines or generally being unreliable. I managed not to get fired (by the skin of my teeth) and somehow ended up landing a gig in house with a client.

Advice work, no hard deadlines, NO BILLING!! The right fit is magic

Were you in big law? I’m in a small firm but my litigation group is comparable to many amlaw 200s. I like the work but can’t deal with being pulled in 100 directions. I feel like I always drop the ball with something.

like

This is what I struggle with! I feel like j need a week to recover after getting through a week with multiple filing deadlines, hearings, depos, and client or witness meetings. I can’t keep up with being pulled in so many different directions and all of it requires me to give everything I have mentally.

Heading into 2023, here are some phrases I'm eliminating:

1. "No worries."
2. "No problem."
3. "Sorry to bother you."
4. "Does this make sense?"
5. "Sorry, I'll fix that right now."

Here's what I'm replacing them with: ⤵
1. My pleasure.
2. Of course, happy to help.
3. When you have a minute, can I get your opinion on ____?
4. Does this help you clarify things?
5. Thank you for catching that!

Additional Posts in Lawyers with ADHD

Tired of my pharmacy. Every single month I have to call the pharmacy for my Adderall, they say they don’t have any prescriptions for me, they ask for additional information, they magically find it, and then I have to wait like 1 to 8 hours to have it filled. It’s a pointless phone call. Why do I have to repeat these shenanigans every month?! Is it just Rite Aid? Is CVS any better? So irritating.

After 4 years I want to leave law because of my adhd! I have been to 4 different firms and at each place I feel like I have been “found out”. At every place at least one attorney catches me about my attention to detail. I am so down on myself now. I can’t bring myself to care about small details that I know don’t actually matter. Sitting at a desk all day in word documents is the ultimate form of torture to me. My strengths are talking to people. I am super outgoing. Looking for a new career

I have a hard time addressing chats when I am focused on something else, because I know it will completely derail me. There’s been some posts on the best planning tools (e.g. planners, calendars, etc.), but my question is how do ppl make sure they use them? I get them and am excited about the possibility of them helping for about a week then I just stop using it. Even if I find it helpful I just never stay consistent with it. Does this happen to others? Any tricks or suggestions to stay consistent using planners, to do lists, calendars, etc.

I had one of those VERY nonproductive days today. I think I accomplished maybe an hour of billable work, even though I had a bunch of stuff to do. I just came off a 300 hour month, and unexpectedly got a continuance on a deadline on Wednesday, and it’s like all of my motivation leeched out of me at once.

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.

Does anyone work in an area with lots of exterior environmental noise (traffic, concerts, trains, etc.) and have tips for not becoming overwhelmed and/or distracted by it? I’m finding that environmental noise has increased near my office now that tourism has picked back up in my city, and I’m struggling to block it out. I’ve tried earplugs but the noises tend to vibrate my office building so the earplugs don’t work well as an entire block.

I’m one of the only attorneys in my Texas firm that had electricity, internet, and water this week. I was warm and comfortable but still could not get any work done because things going on in the outside world are distracting. When I try to work, I feel like I can barely hold a thought in my mind before I get the “wait, what am I doing again?” feeling. I just want to know, I’m not the only one that struggled this week to do any work, right?

What are people’s ADHD med schedules like? I’d love to have coverage that lasts all day, but still lets me sleep.

Taking Concerta in the AM doesn’t give me enough coverage for the whole day. I take it the moment my alarm goes off in the morning at (usually) 6am. Which is great for my morning, but by 3pm I’m starting to fray apart, bouncing around between tasks and getting progressively more distractible and demotivated.
