Does anyone have any insight into accounting roles at Amazon, particularly in the Arlington/DC area? An Amazon recruiter reached out about accounting roles, but the posts in this bowl are about Seattle. Trying to decide if the culture/wlb/pay is even worth looking into since it sounds like the interview process is intense. Base pay seemed pretty low in other posts, but they were a year old and for Seattle.

Speaking as someone with 6+ years of experience in the cyber recruiting industry, there isn’t one single path that will get you there. Training courses and certifications is a good starting place. Another idea is networking networking networking. Reach out to current and former colleagues, managers, directors, friends, family, etc who have connections to the cybersecurity space.
Most junior cyber hires that I’ve helped facilitate did not have the resume that matched the job description. But they had the base set of skills, interviewed incredibly well, and showed the interviewer they were willing to roll up their sleeves and learn.
I agree 100%. Thank you for the advice! I’ve switched my career from diesel technology to IT. Believe it or not it was purely through networking. I want to get these certifications to show my capabilities, knowledge, and willingness to keep on learning.
I’d recommend taking some courses (check out Cybrary.io) on Security Operations Analyst (SOC Analyst) and look for that type of job. It focuses on event monitoring and incident response. You might also find a Security Admin position that handles care & feeding of security systems, but that often gets rolled up to Security Engineers, rather than existing as a dedicated role. Within the SOC there are usually tiered jobs and formal career paths defined. Gardening your first shot so that you can start building experience is key, then network and develop reputation.
Good luck!
Awesome! Going to check out that course, thank you for the recommendation. I was looking into security operations analyst as well but it definitely looks like I will have to build up to that. As a director, do you think my system admin experience would benefit me in that direction? I’m open to security admin but I’ve talked to a lot of coworkers and buddies and they told me the exact the same thing you mentioned about it falling under security engineers.
Also on a side note, do you think the certificates I’m chasing is the right path? I’m enjoying all the information the Google cybersecurity is providing, but at the same time I want to be realistic with my expectations.
