I have 9 years of exp, 10 lpa CTC, location Kolkata. Working as tech lead in support project. I am doing full-time-degree masters in data science from IITJ in parallel. If I want to switch after getting degree I will be considered fresher in data science but experienced overall. What sort of CTC can I expect or ask for? Very mature decision. I picked Deloitte offer over McK offer because I didn’t think I’d get the same WLB at McK that D provides me at the Manager level. It’s less money, but I’m in this for partnership, and I think I can get there easier at D.
Good for you. I think a lot of us are groomed to prioritize prestige. I mean, just read the comments on this app; the respect given to your opinions is often tied to the ranking system of firms that so many of us desperately cling to. But nearly all of us complain of being overworked, exhausted, under appreciated, depressed, anxious, you name it. Clearly, prestige does not equal happiness. It’s something I think many of us realize but most of us have a hard time moving away from, and I think it’s natural for you to question whether you made the right choice. But I think if the trade off is more free time and more work flexibility for a maxed out salary, you’re still making the right one, especially if you’re still getting a hefty salary bump with the offer you chose. Congrats and do not look back 😊
Is this normal?
It really depends on what you want to do in the future. Working at Amazon can be taxing but also a great learning experience. I believe in learning and that’s why I am here. Everyone has different motivation and are at different stages in life.
Amazon is a flat organization and don’t have the bull shit of staff doing admin work.

Yeah that’s what I’m worried about. Worried that bc I chose a job that isn’t the biggest challenge with the most prestige that I’ll lock myself into some trajectory of mediocrity
Id think its totally normal but it sounds like you will be much happier in the one your chose!! I think you chose correctly
Society tells us to chase prestige so it’s normal to feel anxious to swim against that norm. But you’re prioritizing your own happiness, which no company name or salary offer can truly give you alone. Life is short. Work on what interests you!

Aww thanks guys. Anyone else have anxiety about turning down a job? I feel like I’m about to break up with someone or fire someone. I get the worse anxiety about rejecting people.

Honestly: a lot of times we feel that way because we put too much stock into how we think we’re valued. They will just go to next person in line and lose zero sleep over your rejection. A company will lay people off without hesitation, so it feels like a break up because we think it’s person vs person but it’s person vs organization
Wait, I’m confused. Are you saying amazon is offering more $, better WLB, but you’re turning it down because of prestige? Or the other way around (more prestigious, less WLB/Pay)?
Ah, I see. I think there’s a certain level of maturity to turn down a ‘prestigious’ offer. Some never gain the self confidence to jump into the unknown.
I remember when I left banking for a startup - my colleagues thought I was mental and thinking it would kill my ‘pedigree’. Then that startup was bought by Google a couple years later.
I still don’t truly care where I work, but what I’m doing. Congrats OP - both offers are amazing and I congratulate you on being able to separate reality from marketing!
