I interviewed with Firm A months ago and accepted a position to start this upcoming fall. Group leader called me to offer the position back in November 2020. Besides interviewing with partners at the firms, and diligent follow ups notifying them of my interest to get started, no communication has transpired since. It turns out that I accepted a better offer w/ Firm B for personal reasons and won’t be going to Firm A. What is the best way to notify Firm A? Call/email group leader? Call/email HR?

Current S& partner, former MBB partner here.
Stuff like GPA cutoffs are flexible-ish for the right reasons. If you were just below the cutoff but had, for example, an Olympic medal that would probably get you looked at. But networking by spending the summer doing cold reach outs on LinkedIn to MBBers is probably not going to generate the kind of relationships that will get you an exception.
Also, I know the summer internship experience this summer is kind of lame. I’m sorry for that. Pandemic and all that. But I encourage you to give our firm a shot. S& is pretty great, in many ways it’s every bit the equal of an MBB firm, and in many ways it’s better. As I said, I left an MBB firm to come here, and I’ve never regretted that decision.
Have worked at one and colleagues/friends who have worked at the others. Depends on the MBB imo.
As i'm no longer in industry I can say i'm not biased either way :p.
In short re-recruit if you get an offer try and get an idea of the office you'll be working at and the culture there to see if you'd like it unless Mck as Mck is global. (Bain/BCG/S& regional focus).
If you get Mck go for Mck.
Also nothing wrong with S& but there are better shops out there. You'd be silly to limit your opportunities.
Also S& seems to have varying reputation based on country.. i'm sure your aware of the rep in the US but still seems highly regarded in UK/EU if i'm not mistaken?
Strict. Think about the other applicants who have a better GPA and are good at networking
I had a 2.5 in undergrad, though I used the MBA route to help avoid bringing that up
Also the only consulting firm that made a big deal of it was Deloitte, interviewer was a dick.
Ended up with either decision round interview or offer from McK and Bain as well

It’s only week 1 of the internship and you’re already looking for a way out?! I promise it’s not that bad, right now sucks for everyone, but overall I’ve loved my 5 years at S&.
Also for what it’s worth, I have friends at every firm (post MBA) and I promise, we all do the same stuff and are frequently at the same clients at the same time. MBB is not some holy grail you need to constantly be aiming for
It’s not necessarily a hard cutoff in the sense that we automatically eliminate applications below a specific GPA. Depending on the perceived difficulty of your school and major, we assign a rating to your GPA. We also assign ratings to factors like extracurriculars, work experience, etc. You can mitigate your lower GPA if you can make up for it in the other places in your application. That said, I don’t think I’ve really seen anyone below a ~3.0 get an interview.

The other posts are right. In general, something can be below the bar, but the other things need to vastly overcompensate.
Got a BCG interview with a 3.4, didn’t do well on the case but it’s possible just need to network well
