100% this. As a young partner in a hard charging V25, I was certain that the world would spin off its axis if I checked out for even a week. Then my wife announced “I’m taking the kids to France for three weeks this summer. Want to join us?” Long story short I sweated the spring out, planned as best I could, then took the plunge into an abyss with no mobile service and only dial up internet. For 3 weeks. 😱 After a couple of days of trying to work with the hopeless dial up, I gave up. Guess what? When I emerged theee weeks later my partners and associates had everything running at least as well as I would have. I’ve never turned back and 20+ years later still take at least one three week vacation per year, during which I stay completely checked out. If you aren’t doing the same it’s your fault, not your firm’s.
Four years ago we sent our last kid to college and I took three months off and went traveling. The only thing I regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. I have been a far better lawyer as a result. I’m planning for a repeat next year.
