I disagree. Consulting is one of those professions where it is a must to be polished. Clients are paying significant $ for consultants. Why would they pay for someone who can’t articulate their thoughts well?
C - generally I have agreed with you but it is our job to make things beautiful and polished for the client. I agree, sometimes going from the 90% to 100% may not provide the returns on time investment it may take, but again, that's our job. Make it polished and pretty. I think 90 to 100 is a waste of time personally, but I'm paid good money to do it so I will.
It’s part of the ruse that is the foundation of our industry! We’re all cosplaying as experts and fixers. If we are physically polished and pretty, and our deliverables are physically polished and pretty, we distract from the fact that the CONTENT of our deliverables is probably basic, easily google-able, and usually infeasible because it’s not drawn from significant expertise. We have to keep up the illusion that we are worth our cost or the whole house of cards comes crashing down.

Have been on both sides at MBB and now in corporate. The difference in work product is what makes it work paying for, and that means zero defects. Try to find pleasure in making habits out of the polish as refining your craft! The skill doesn’t stop being valuable when you leave consulting and makes you stand out. I felt the same way when I was 2 yoe though. Outside consulting you can get away with a bit less polish but you won’t want to once you come to embrace it as a habit bc you’ll be flying because of it <3

I resent the need to make everything so pretty. But what I’ve learned is a lot of people mistakenly view the fancy presentation as important.
I have a polished colleague - dresses well, attractive, British accent, beautiful decks. He can sell ice to eskimos - and at a very very high price. The content is just meh, and he’s burned through millions in multiple companies that he launched. The guy is patently unsuccessful but somehow he keeps raising money.
