Very frustrated. My HR team as part of on boarding told me (multiple times) that my 401(k) plan had a true up if you maxed out early in the year. So that is what I did this year. I find out today that is not the case. Is there any recourse? Can I undo/re characterize contributions? Anything? This is like a $7k issue. Any other bowl to post this question to as well?

You may want to reach out to the 401k administrator to see if there's any recharacterizarion or reclassification they can do

Also generally speaking, I'd defer to the 401k administrator versus my company HR team to know and advise on the ins and outs of the 401k plan terms specific to my company

Match is entirely dictated by your company. Undoing 401k contributions is a tax event, which can’t be done in normal situations, and is unlikely to be path you want to take.

You best chance is likely to escalate what you were told onboarding. If you can remember names of people who told you this, that will be helpful. (Of course you want to be sure you remember correctly what was said)
If they referred you to documentation, which you didn’t read carefully enough, then unfortunately it may be your mistake.

You also should calculate the match you would be eligible for if had you contributed later in the year. Account for any vesting period where you might not be eligible for any match

You should push them to pay you any amount you missed out due to contributing too early due to bad advice.
But do not push hard for something said in conversation that you (or any employee) never would have been eligible for match for because of their vesting rules

My company has a true up and they pay it out in Jan of the next year, but it counts towards the previous year’s contribution. I feel like you already put in the work and they can’t undo a benefit for the previous year? That’s crazy

Do you have that in writing?

I’d also do the math for a true up, co worker had this at his last job, made a big stink over about $150

Make sure it’s worth it.

Hello all!
I'm 26, I studied economics but I don't know why I'm not much into investing/trading. Someone else like this?
I recognize this is not a very good approach for someone with money "knowledge" and I would like to change this mindset. My main weakness is that I easily get bored of following the market and that I do not see big opportunities. Any advice?
Where to start learning, general advice for LT and ST investments, things you learnt, books that changed your pov on the topic etc.

Thx!

I have mostly passive investments. I was thinking the other day: what if everyone had only passive investments? Wouldn’t this create incredibly high amount of systemic risk? Are we all sheep??

Did ok on a real estate investment and will have around $200k net to reinvest. Looking for opinions on short to mid-term investments for consideration. Moderate to high risk tolerance. TIA

Is there a definitive guide to cost of living? The obvious cost of living centers (SF, NYC, LA etc.) get covered a lot, but I’m wondering where my city falls. It’s a modest Midwest city with ~100k residents but is a relatively touristy spot. It often feels like a MCOL area but I’m not sure how to adequately judge that, and it would be helpful to know when comparing salaries and the like.

I’m considering building up my I bonds to eventually replace my 6 month expenses emergency savings account. Any downsides I’m not considering?
