For VC specifically, the most realistic / shortest time to completion path, given that you have an IT consulting background, would be to find a way into product / tech diligence + CDDs at a reputable firm (e.g., EYP SSG, Bain, BCG) then recruit from there. Sure you could get an MBA and pivot into a more direct pipeline role like IB or work at an actual start up etc., but the time and effort those paths would take would surpass just switching to the closest relevant direct pipeline role i.e., TDD + CDD focused on software.
At the junior level, VC at the minimum cares about 1.) your understanding and experience in the deal / transactions in the industries that the firm invests 2.) your passion and knowledge for those industries (e.g., if you met a founder, could you actually hold an intelligent conversation with them about their start up and their industry) 3.) the name brand credibility you bring (e.g., will you maintain or improve the perceived quality and pedigree of the firm)
Imo TDD + CDD work at EYP or MBB would get you there on 1, 2, and 3 given that 1.) this type of consulting work is obviously deal / transactions based so you’ll begin to get an idea of how investors think and how to evaluate a potential investment 2.) TDD specifically will give you a strong foundation when talking to folks in tech / software 3.) EYP and MBB have historically sent folks to reputable VC firms. Yes a West Monroe does TDDs too, but they have not sent nearly as many folks into buyside seats and they won’t bring the same name brand pedigree nor (imo) give you the same intellectual training that these VCs are looking for.
Probably just a networking thing at this point
PE recruiting falling off a cliff and VC is even worse fyi
