Was trying to help a friend of mine from the World Bank Group who is not a US citizen open a brokerage account, apply for a credit card, and buy an I-bond, but he seems to have run into issues at each turn. Unsure if it’s because of the country he represents or his type of Visa but he got an SSN and it says only for work or something along those lines. Open to suggestions. Should state that he is not subject to US income tax in his role. Some diplomatic oriented thing I think.

Is he new to the country? He'll need to get a secured cc to build his credit score before he can get 'real' credit cards. Brokerages adds just a matter of getting the right paperwork to them.

It's hard being foreign in the us

Hi, I'm also an immigrant and have had issues opening a brokage account. If he has an H1B visa he should be able to open with some brokage but some might require he be a a US resident (e.g. Sofi). On top of that some countries do have restrictions. Mine does for example, so I couldn't open Sofi or Robin Hood. I took a break from looking more into this, but I think Vantage didn't ask much to open an account and accepted non-residents.

Not sure but I don’t think it’s an H1B. Might be a G4 or G5. When the contract ends they have to go back. The weird thing is the message they got when they tried to open an account was the identity could not be verified

If we consider 2021 a more "regular" year, I varied from $600 saved one month up to $3.2k in another (though that was partially due to a job change)... It's not affecting my overall saving % (was 46%) but wondering if I should try to even it out a bit more?
