I had the same issue 6 mths ago when my son was around the same age (now he's 15 mths).. my wife was pushing the healthy diet agenda (organic and whatnot) but kept gagging and then endup crying to get pouches etc... she wouldn't listen to my suggestions.. so (behind her back) I started sneaking in "unsanctioned" yummy snacks and junk (kinder chocolate, kids chips, a french fry)... Magically he didn't gag when he chewed and swallowed them..
Now he's a living Hoover (i.e vacuum cleaner).. finishes his food in 10 minutes flat - all solids
Check a few posts down… I put a longer post in the person having issues with an 18mo old eating. 11mo for us was very hit or miss. They need such little food… I think 3 tbsp is considered a meal for them for example. Plus with teething they will be picky on texture / gravitate to bottle.
If the doc is happy with their growth, I wouldn’t worry for one second. Just get your routines, keep offering stuff, and don’t stress. They will come around with time.
Our baby also didn't figure out eating solids without gagging until a few months after the first year. Mushy non purees like oatmeal, applesauce, scrambled eggs, cottage cheese etc were great transition foods that she loved and could manage. Gerber puffs were slightly more solid but dissolve in saliva - good for her to practice hand eye coordination and moving food around her mouth. Other stuff I cut up super small so they could be swallowed whole with no gag potential. Even at 22 months she isn't great about chewing but appetite is great and the gagging has been gone for a while.
Were they checked for a tongue tie?
Yes, no tongue tie
My son did the same thing. We transitioned slowly from purées to solids. We tried things like yogurt with fruit in it, oatmeal, etc. anything like a purée that has a bit more texture will help them transition.
This sounds like my wife! Can’t hurt to try!!
My first was like that too! No lip or tongue tie, we did feeding therapy for a while but honestly I think she just grew out of it. Once she realized she liked food she tried everything. I wanna say she was very close to 2 before she started eating real food.
My son is 13 months and is exactly like this. If I even bring certain foods to his face that he doesn’t like, he shuts his eyes real tight lol he doesn’t even wanna look at the food. I always offer it though incase he changes his mind. And I think that’s helping. He finally ate some pasta the other night. Wouldn’t eat it the next day but hey, it’s progress none the less. He’s a healthy weight and it doesn’t seem to be doing any harm so I’m not worried about it. He’ll eat different foods when he’s ready. I’ll just be here offering them and waiting.
