Weekend study: python vs SQL? Which is more interesting and beneficial to career development for PM/Supply chain/product manager role?

If you’re good at Python, there are all manner of jobs you could find yourself well paid to do.

Don’t bother with SQL, leave that to offshore workers

like

Understanding SQL will help you understand data - which is applicable at all levels.

Python will lead you down a road where you might be able to do things like data scraping 10x slower and at 2x the cost of a more junior team member when you exit.

Feels like a no brainier.

likehelpful

BAH1, much respect, and good luck!

Python

like

I have no idea why you’re mentioning supply chain and prod mgmt in the same line

like

When I was considering exits, the key requirement I saw was always SQL and not Python (for most strategy and BD related roles - not data science roles). Really depends on when you’re gunning for I would say. I get that python is the more powerful tool, but it’s not for every role

like

I’m thinking Python no?

Python.

This whole question is confusing. I don’t want PMs that do delivery, I want PMs that PM well. I want people that do delivery to deliver well. I’m not saying either has career limitations (you can be a SME that brings in banner clients or a PM that grows a $10M contract to $20m and I’ll happily pay the same). Focus on your industry and actual talent segment here: do you want to work in technology and engineer useful solutions? Or do you want to drive value behind a team that builds those solutions by enabling their success and engaging the client to ensure those measures of success are mutually understood. I’m being slightly reductionist here, but seriously consider the path you want to take and engage accordingly

like

That’s definitely not gonna work for Deloitte. In my previous project, I did 4 roles and the key was being flexible and able to do anything when there’s a lack of resources situation. I don’t think a PM who can only do PM but not understand supply chain can do a good job

like

You could learn SQL in a day. Python will take a longer time before you can create anything useful. Both are helpful, but I’d say SQL (as someone who knows both). Don’t overlook R, either, depending on the kind of work you’re doing.

like

Strongly urge you learn both. Seen plenty of legacy data scientists or modern ML Engineers struggle for not knowing SQL or Python on Spark. SQL is the first language of data - if you don’t know SQL you will always be walking around with a crutch not able to fetch your own data. If you are a PowerPoint analyst then single threaded Python that runs on your laptops or VM or GPUs that don’t scale will work - to run algorithms at scale learn Python they runs on Spark (PySpark) - Summary - PySpark without SQL is going to battle with one arm.

like

Which is more interesting to you? You may hate traditional programming and love database development and management and writing sql. It comes to what you like. Programming in any form is only as good as your interest

Python

Hi- I’m an hourly AA, been on the role for 6 months now and it’s my first AA job. I did not get a raise when I took the job because it was technically a demotion ( I was a team leader at a contact center). I assist two VPs and now they want to add a third because they’re looking for the “ 3:1 ratio “. Should I ask for a raise? Is this normal? I know another AA that handles 3+ people but idk if she’s hourly or salary. Any thoughts?

2. How good is WLB at TW for a Lead Consultant? Approx working hours on a daily basis?
3. How flexible is TW for WFH?

Hi there -
I applied to an experienced consultant position at Bain and just heard back. Yesterday, I received an invite to a HireVue one-way interview to complete. Today, I received an invite for a coffee chat with a consultant. I’m of course going to do both, but the emails make it seem like they are almost two separate paths/disconnected processes. Can anybody offer some insight into each of these/the process?

Hi
Applied for a position in Johnson and Johnson Canada. Reached the final round 3 weeks back. After not getting any updates I emailed the HR a couple of weeks back. They responded back telling me that they’ll have an update for me the next week. Again I emailed them on Thursday asking if they have anything for me before the long weekend ( Good Friday & Easter). No response whatsoever. Will emailing them again be inappropriate? I desperately need this job
