Fairly high asian population in Seattle, and definitely a cultural thing for many of them. I was raised here and we were taught to do this too (am white). Always keep your toes trimmed or wear good socks 😉
White person here too. Grew up in the Midwest with the joys of 4 seasons (rain, mud, snow)…..which meant yes, take your shoes off at the door.
I, too, reside in Seattle, and as a person of color, it's standard operating procedures, especially when one takes into consideration ALL of the unhealthy things that can be potentially tracked into one's resident.
In fact, we have a misplaced sign on the floor of our entrance that entices someone to reach down and pick it up with the following statement, "Please remove your shoes before entering this house. THANKS!"
P.S. We also have a shoe rack, two chairs, and an assortment of slippers and those shoe covers for those professionals needing to keep their work shoes on as a courtesy inside the entryway.
