Remember that you are Boss-Hunting more than Job-Hunting. A great boss can outweigh a bad job. A great boss will give you the reference.
During the interview, size up the person you will be reporting to. If he/she exhibits any signs of egotistic narcissism, RUN, don’t walk. Avoiding egotistic narcissists will save you from job-acceptance regret and depression.
Yes. Job satisfaction has a lot to do with the type of person you meet as your boss.
If they use any of the following phrases either during interview or in the job posting:
"we are a family"
"everyone here wears many hats"
"we are scrappy and have a start-up mentality"
"we have free snacks and a ping pong table"
"work hard, play hard"
“We are a family” also means they expect undying loyalty from you, long hours cause you gotta support the “family”, unprofessional behavior and boundary busting. Major dysfunction.
In my experience...
If one of the interview questions is naming a challenging time at work and how you overcame it. It usually means there will be many challenging times at this work place.
If they ask for any sort of to test or assignment. Usually indication that they don't know how to hire, or they don't know what they're looking for.
Multiple rounds of interviews. Unless it's a C-suite role, not sure why there needs to be 4-6 rounds to make a decision. Again, no clue what they're looking for.
If they tell you in the interview that this isn't a 9-5 place. Prepare to work evenings, weekends and have no life outside work.
If you're working as a team and they don't let you have an interview or connect with said person. You end up in a dysfunctional partnership.
Last minute switch during the interview process, whether it's role, title, pay, job description, who you're reporting to, etc. A place that can't make decisions.
If the office is quiet or pretty vacant, company is going under or out of business soon.
I was once badgered by the interviewing dept head about how I handle workflow and deadlines when that really depends on a number of company variables, like are there freelancers that we could use. When I said that, he got belligerent and repeated the question. Didn't get that gig and could tell he is likely a mean guy to work for.

"We're more of a family."
Yes. RUN don't walk if you hear this.
I've been in interviews where the interviewer seemed bored or disinterested in being there.
I was recently told that they staff lean and everyone wears many hats. I couldn’t ignore that red flag
Dell laptop
To quote Corporate Dumpster Fire, "if your company sends you a Dell, I would look for a new job as they are probably experiencing cash flow issues"
They keep moving it cause the interviewer's schedule is always a shit show. No one can give a real answer about process. They hide the compensation from you until the very last second OR they make you accept before they reveal the pay. "Unlimited PTO".
Pro
Aka tech
When they name three people in response to “Who has held this job in the past five years?”
“Organized Chaos”
"We're looking for a ROCKSTAR" LMAO!
Or “Unicorn”
They go out of there way to say they have a “no asshole policy.”
You are very shrewd to pick up on this as a red flag. Yes, my life experience has also taught me that this phrase is a big irony. Those companies have the biggest assholes working there. They can’t even recognize the asshole in themselves.
If they can’t clearly define what success looks like in the first six months, that’s a red flag. I want a clear path to success during my first six months in a role.
Rising Star
They talk excessively about how great the company "culture" is.
Not sure if it's always a red flag, but when you hear that people there have "a lot of side hustles" my first thought is that they don't pay enough.
Any role where you're expected to be a "disruptor".
They use Microsoft Office/Teams 🚩
Not a red flag at all!
This has happened to me. If you don't meet anyone on the team or if they tell you very little about who you will be working with.
Maybe they were busy when you were interviewing? Let’s not think that anything and everything is a redflag.
‘Start up mentality’ means we’ll work work you to the bone and then probably go bust suddenly
‘Fast paced’ - ditto
When they've clearly mixed you up with another applicant and hadn't seen your actual portfolio at all.
