What are the annual billable hours expectations for an associate in a Big4 international tax, M&A tax, or SALT group?

M&A at KPMG has never been above a 1600 minimum for any level. These days it’s more like 1500 if I understand correctly (I left a few years back).

Actual can vary widely by quality of the staff and how busy the office is

like

Don’t they pay like 100k? I was offered 98 from EY which is pennies compared to anywhere else- but maybe I just got a low offer

like

I meant how many hours you are expected to bill each year. (E.g. 1600 hours per year? 1900? 2000?)

OP asked about hours, not comp…

EY hours expectation is the same across all groups but I don’t remember what that expectation was. I’m 90% sure it was less than 2,000 when I was there.

Annual Target (M&A Tax) is 1950 (pre pandemic). Most leave for big law because the hours can be similar for less pay. Back then, Associate base salary: $125k; Senior Associate: $145k; Manager 1-3: $180k -$200k; Senior Manager1-3: $210k-$235k. Average partner salary: $1.2M (first year partner may be 400-600k range).

Note: numbers will be slightly higher if you do WNT.

This was circa 2019/2020 at EY (NYC) and give or take a few thousand here or there but generally in this ball park. Annual bonus $7k-$10k and promotional bonus (eg from senior to manager or manager to SM can be around $20k in addition to the annual bonus your promotional year going into the next rank/pay band)

Depends heavily on office and practice group. M&A in prinaries has to be in the 135 range or so now.

A lot of secondaries are in the 120k+ range to start.

At Deloitte, hours vary by group/office, but generally expect to be 35-45 client hours per week year round, some being higher and some being lower depending on deal flow, timelines, etc.

Salary for M&A is around 100 to start and mid 100s for managers and over 200 for senior managers. That obviously varies based on experience in level and office. International is slightly lower in terms of pay.

SM1. I am telling you what it is now. I have inside knowledge on the comp. Yes, there are people outside of those averages, as people get close to the high end of a range as they’re about to be promoted or live in NYC compared to Dallas. But those are the numbers on average.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

Recently lateraled as a public defender in HCOL area to ID in LCOL area for $$$. I’ve been at the job a little over a month. During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)
