What are things you expect out of your project manager? Anything they do that goes beyond their role in your opinion?

Am I the only one who read this question as what do amazing PMs do to add value beyond their role, like above and beyond? Not as “what do PMs do that deserve a smack and a firm stay-in-your-lane”?

like

No I thought that too

Thanks for the post. You touched a nerve.

The essence of PM'ing is to reduce the difference between what IS HAPPENING and what SHOULD BE HAPPENING. Ensuring there is clarity and alignment (internal & external) around what should be happening is the more difficult aspect. This applies across many dimensions - timing, budget, allocations, scope, production value, nature and & type of feedback.

re: going beyond their role - Many PMs started their careers in other areas and bring those skills to the table - If there isn't a BA on a team, a PM is usually a good backup. Many can do a fair job at UX, can write, and code. With experience, especially if they do process work, they gain knowledge of a broad range of activities and deliverables - a mile wide and a few feet deep in certain areas - invaluable, right?

What I call, the "curse of competence", can encumber PMs. They get dragged or insert themselves into too many places. If an area is covered by an appropriate resource(s), I think the PM should stay focused on making the trains run on time.

A related concern to PMs working beyond their role, which is fueled by misperceptions, resource constraints, etc. is when they are relegated to admin tasks - schedule the meeting, book the conference room, take the notes. PMs are generally willing, able, and dedicated to success but their plates can become a dumping ground.

Giving creative direction. Occasional opinions, fine. But telling the team what creative direction to go in is beyond there role.

like

Depends on the skill set of the PM and team config but in general, I agree. PMs have more than enough ground to cover, the main colors they should mind are green, yellow and red.

Looks like more ppl are triggered/bitter at the idea of PM overstepping bounds than the actual point of your question 🤣

like

I’m not bitter I just think PM gets pigeon holed with this particular line of feedback frequently where other groups do not. Because of this, I try to ask others to think about why this might happen and bring light to it. If you want to be super literal, anyone who performs a task outside their job description is going beyond their role.🤷🏼‍♀️

A good project manager will facilitate projects moving forward and ensure information is disseminated properly (right people, right format, on time, etc).

A great project manager will see challenges in workflow/timing/etc and facilitate problem solving by getting the right people in the room (even if it is a virtual room). The great ones see the strengths and weaknesses of a team and ensure each member has what they need to perform their best. A great project manager is like a coach, they’re the person that keeps the ball moving down the field while largely standing on the sidelines cheering. A great project manager is everyone’s best project friend.

A bad project manager will let problems with workflow fester, timelines get tossed aside, not include key stakeholders in meetings/emails/dissemination of info, and/or dictate another group’s role. A bad project manager sews strife in a team or points fingers.

I love working with great project managers, get the work done well with good ones, and sigh when assigned a bad one.

I think when you start critiquing people who “go beyond their role” you are focused on the wrong things.

I’ve always found when people don’t like input from a PM that disagrees with their own input or plan they say they are “going beyond their role”
