Its usually a sign of an insecure boss.
Deal with it head on:
- Ask why your end of week deadline doesn't work. Has a new schedule driver emerged?
- Ask if there was a different expectation that you both hadn't discussed.
- Explain that you like to work independently and know you are a trustworthy manager, so the boss can trust you'll deliver well, on time, on the original deadline.
- Make sure boss knows you're open to feedback but sharing a WIP is a premature review point.
- if need be, call on previous examples where you have delivered great work so boss knows you're good on your own and will check in at appropriate points.
Don’t take it as a criticism of you...the request is not about you, it’s about your boss and their needs. Find out that’s motivating their ask, what challenge they’re trying to deal with. Likely one of their seniors is asking questions so they’re trying to gather info.
Solve their problem and you’ll solve yours.
I had a boss the week before xmas ask me to forward him a correspondence I was having with a vendor so that he could “see how it was going.” A year into working at this agency and this is the closest I’ve gotten to a performance review 😑
