Did you not give it back to your employer? When I left my job I returned the 401k back to the firm
?!?!? What do you mean.. it’s your retirement account? Unless your 401k match or employer contribution had a vesting period?
If you end up leaving in the same 401k, check the terms. A lot of company 401k plans will charge you ridiculous fees to maintain your account if you’re no longer an employee.
Yeah I think a lot of people overlook this since 401k’s are the definition of “set it and forget it”

If you ever plan to do a mega backdoor roth ira, you should just roll over to the new 401k, and not into a traditional ira

You returned your 401k (your money) back to the firm?
Surely you are joking.

Question was not about unvested - it was simply 401k.
In case of unveated nothing to return because you don't get to take out the unveated part.

Rolled over to new employers 501k plan as thy had many good investment options.
I did a split between rollover account and Roth IRA. Kept everything that way, did not roll funds into new employer 401k, started over fresh. Things are kind of garbage right now. I wanted to keep what I’d collected at my former employer safe. Glad I made that choice.
Thanks for the insights man. I just came back to USA after number of years and need to refresh all of retirement info. So your insights are appreciated
I moved it to an IRA, managed it myself for a year or two, and now have a financial manager doing it (along with other investments).
Rolled into IRA. Used that balance to qualify for chase private client, then don’t touch it at all now
Moved it to an IRA and paid a professional, down 30% in 16 months 🤡
Why not just throw it into an index fund. Will save a lot on fees
