I have worked in municipal government for almost 17 years. I love what I do as an Inspector, but the environment is toxic, and administration horrible. I have an opportunity to go into the private sector side, as well a second interview for another municipality doing same job. Private sector job will pay 35,000 more but will be 3 hrs away my husband is in law enforcement and can’t leave due to his position. Concerns are: private sector and when recession hits, it’s construction, away from hubby
From having lived in Cambridge for years my impression was Harvard Community College
I know several people at the firm that did this, and they literally bring it up every single chance they get. It's kinda funny to be honest, and I know it triggers the shit out of people that went to Harvard, which is equally entertaining.
Rising Star
Proper MBA elsewhere.

Depends on who gets your profile, to me it screams wannabeism . However the brand is strong and people not very informed that it does add a lot of clout with a lot of people.
Kennedy is one of the top graduate programs. Period. Also one of the top policy schools. Looking at their admissions stats and alumni profiles will tell you that.
I say this as someone who has never attended (or applied to) Harvard, but these are easy things to research.
Well, now that Harvard is pretty well shut down, everyone’s effectively going to the “extension school” 🤷🏻♂️
Really though, it’s what you make of it. I’m pursuing my Masters there and while I accept that the puritanicals out there may be triggered by my accomplishment, it will bother them far more than it will bother me or 99% of the rest of the population. The content and instructors are phenomenal, the students are more experienced and bring a real world perspective to each class, and when the shutdown ends classes are available (and encouraged) on-campus.
So, to think the accomplishment of achieving a degree from any of Harvard University’s degree granting schools (Kennedy, Law, Business, GSAS, Extension, etc) simultaneous with working full-time at a major firm is somehow “less than” is simply stupidity in its purest form.
Don’t do it for prestige. Prestige is a fickle thing. Do it for you. It will help open doors, sure, just like any other line item on a resume might, but ultimately your performance once you walk through the door is what will matter most.
The only person I know who had Harvard Extension on their resume was one of the least qualified consultants I have worked with, and I’m not exaggerating. I’m not going to assume that about every person, but it wasn’t a good first impression since it’s what apparently got them in the door.
Should I go for MLA from the extension school or do a proper MBA elsewhere (HBS is a pipe dream for me).
Do they offer extension degrees? I thought it was a certificate.
Yeah they offer full fledged Masters degrees from Data Science to Anthropology.
If you want to get one for your own knowledge, since I’m sure the courses are taught by good professors, then power to you. But don’t expect the degree to do anything for you or your career. I’ve seen people with Extension Degrees put “Harvard” in their LinkedIn title and that’s just not a good look.
D3 - Thank you.l for your perspective. Honestly, I’m thinking about doing this for three reasons.
1 - I need to gain the knowledge contained in these courses. This is not career advancement related, it’s skills related.
2 - At $35K, it is pretty cost effective for access to good courses in the area I’m looking to learn.
3 - I’d like to have that diploma on my wall at home but wouldn’t pretend I actually got in to the broader Harvard college.
I went there and am friends with people who have ended up at other MBB firms. I attended classes with working professionals from Big 4 firms as well as the bigger Biotechs in the Cambridge area
It does 1000% attract some clout chasing weirdos. But I will say that there are people there who are genuinely brilliant. The program is designed for working professionals who want a masters degree but don’t want to stop working.
It is what you make of it. It’s not an MBA replacement.
Feel free to ask me any questions.
When I worked for Harvard, we would get classes for like $50 so I took a bunch of them over the years. Very useful. I'm not sure about the degrees, but I definitely learned a lot from the classes and they were not easy.
Harvard extension is like hair extension. Period
