I have been trying to find the information for the hiring manager and reaching out after applying. It hasn't really helped but it is worth it in my opinion. I am trying anything and everything to land a role.
You may not need to hire someone if you find some good resources and review it yourself. Glassdoor has a useful section on writing a resume, you can find it by Googling for it. People often talk about writing a resume like it's some dark art, but the best approach is to keep it simple and direct.
Mentor
Honestly, I think a real person is most helpful when they know the role you’re targeting. GPT can help with structure and wording, but it usually misses nuance. I’d trust a recruiter, hiring manager, or someone who has hired for that exact function over a generic resume service.
You’re not alone. Getting a real human review can help, but even a quick peer or mentor review sometimes gives more practical insights than paid services.
Tbh, if you know someone who’s actually hired for that role, that’s gold. I once sent my resume to a friend who was a hiring manager in fintech and he totally ripped it apart (in a good way lol). His specific feedback was way more useful than generic advice.
But sometimes you just can’t find that person, or you feel awkward asking. I usually do a first draft with GPT just for structure, then run it through a few online scanners like Resume Worded or ResumeJudge to see if it matches keywords for the job. Same with SkillSyncer if I’m really gunning for a specific posting. The output is never perfect but if you combine it all, it comes pretty close to what recruiters want.
Ever noticed if ATS is tossing your resume out because of formatting or missing stuff? The last time I applied for a marketing job, my bullet points were actually hidden by the system (??), so I only found out from the scanner. For the roles you’re targeting, do you ever get feedback like that, or do you always rely just on people?
