I’d agree with McK1. Most people that leave do so voluntarily. Although some probably see the writing on the wall too
I think the percentage that actually get counseled out here is pretty low... Not sure what the exact number is.
Ex McK. I’d say the number of BAs counselled out is under 10%. Maybe under 5%. There are definitely people who don’t perform well. But they’re unlikely to be having a good time at McKinsey so tend to jump before they’re pushed.
More people tend to get pushed out at higher ranks - AP in particular

My estimate of those asked to leave would be <10%
+1 to this. I have someone on my team now who previously had a poor review and was on performance watch. They are now a star performer and the rock of the team. Most of that I think is just more time / experience with the job and a different role and team
Been 7 years at the firm. I have seen 2 people CTLd.

*which means there were likely more than 10
I remember reading about all the ex-McK people that were only at the firm for 1-2 years and was like "why did they all leave so soon?.....oh, I get it"
Typically you’ll get subtle hints that it’s best for you to leave, and people do it voluntarily
The numbers I’ve seen suggest 5%. But agree with others that a lot of people leave before being counseled out because… this job is hard when you’re doing well and terrible when you’re not doing well.

I was CTL'd without receiving corrective feedback other than a concerns review that provided qualitative feedback.
I left without telling others that I was CTL'd. Most don't know I was CTL'd. I am probably not a tally mark on their mental list of the number of people that have been CTL'd.

When we look at attrition we have two figures. Regretted attrition and unregretted attrition.
At the moment the regretted one is higher than normal, but long term ~ 10 percent sounds about right
Most people GTFO before they are forced TFO. I would still say that counts as “CTL.”
I would say anyone who really *wants* to and is able to adapt can make it. Question is: do ppl want to?
My hot take: most don’t.
Until partner, right? I feel like lots of people want to make partner but dont
For example, do the bottom 25% of performers get cut or is it closer to bottom 50%?
Much less than 25%. The pipeline to sustain such high losses would be crazy and it takes at least 6 months to get a new consultant ready

So, the whole CTL concept is fascinating to me. It is just your version of a PIP or how would one even find themselves in that situation?

I got sent a document before my review that said "concerns" on it.
Surprise!
Do these percents differ for the post MBA consultant role? I imagine it would be higher.
