Such a good question and I am in the process of doing this. I just asked for two official work from home days and the ability to take 1.5h off every Tuesday morning this sept to Jan bc there is a mommy and me class I’m dying to take my little one too (she’ll be 18m). I’m not sure if this will make things feel better/easier for me but it’s a start. I know I’m not ready to quit or try and go back to freelance etc. (nor can we afford it if I’m being honest) but I feel like this may be a step in the right direction. What I hope employers and HRs realize is that this level of flex is just what’s needed to keep working moms (and maybe dads tho I can’t speak for them and it does appear to be a much different experience emotionally) in the workforce and happy. I can’t tell you many nights I have logged back on at 8pm and worked until midnight to get my work done. The fact of the matter is (and I think many mothers feel this way) I’m totally committed to my work and will get it done and I am totally okay with working till midnight if it means I get more than that fussy hour before bedtime with my baby.
I spoke with my boss first and got his ok and then went to hr and basically told them rather than ask. Is that an avenue you could go?
More flexibility in my schedule is the main thing. I work from home at least once a week and have core hours that I’m in the office. I have a child with special needs and when I returned from my mat leave with her, I asked my boss if I could work from home 2x a week while I got her physical therapist set up, did her EI screenings etc. my boss (a woman) said no. I was like I cannot stay here and found a new job. It just put everything into perspective and I was adamant about the flexibility. My daughter is relatively OK now - only in speech therapy, but my current company is flexible, because as you moms know - there’s always something.
VP2 - that’s sickening. I never understand how people can be so inhumane in the workplace. Why do they care so much about work to pull some shit like that? I hope you quit or at least ask HR to not work under such a monster
I have never asked for anything - but rather just took a few things that help me. Those things include working from home 1-2 days a week, getting in the office around 9:15am and leaving by 4:45pm to catch a train. I of course work much more outside of the time I’m physically there, so those things help a bit. But as we all know, it’s still not enough to balance it all. I truly think our nonstop email culture is the killer, and I don’t see that stopping. I’m never caught up. If anyone has ideas on what to ask for there, I’d love to hear them.
Similar to above, I work from home on Fridays (my kiddo also had medical issues when first coming back from mat leave) so I make most of the appts on that day. Work also pays for my parking so I have access to car to easily pick up and make it to appointments and not have to rely on train. This has been a lifesaver since I can easily get to her in 25 mins rather than rely on public transportation that takes 30-45 mins. I find myself less stressed and can concentrate on work rather than looking at the time and train schedules so I can make it home for daycare pick ups and such.
I leave at 5pm so I can pick my son up. I can work from home if I need to. Also, they partly pay the private international kindergarten for my kid.
My point is that leaving at 5 if working traditional full time hours should, in my opinion, be a standard practice not something we have to ask special permission for.
