It took me a few weeks to get accustomed to the civilian life. I found I was a bit too task-oriented when I initially joined my first job.
To thrive in the civilian workforce I found I had to be more relationship-oriented with my coworkers by talking about our experiences, showing empathy, and understanding their perspectives. It improved my work greatly.
Same, but it took me a bit longer. Jumped into amazon, and had a toxic boss my first two years and last 8 months. Didn’t really start learning and adjusting until 3 years after transition when I left Amazon, but it was quick.
Including college, 3 years. Yes it got easier over time. Now I can't wait to go to work, but that's because my wife is at home 🤣
Took me about a year, I was only in the service for 4 years. It's been 20 years since I've been out and military service seems like forever ago.
It's definitely been weird. Started at Amazon for about 6 months after separating and quit because the amount of ambiguity in what I was supposed to be doing was driving me crazy.
I've since got on at LM and have been adjusting a bit better. I think there's still certain aspects I have stuck in the military but it's definitely gotten better.
Everything gets easier over time. When you get get yourself familiar with the work your reflexes just becomes automatic. Adjustment period varies from ne person to another so don't compare your progress with other people. Just do everything in your own pace.
I went to grad school to “decompress” as I like to say. It gave me perspective on my peers, the generation, and the differences after having been institutionalized in my personality and theirs. I also had to write with my hands after not having done so for a 7 years. It helped to become more articulate, gain business acumen, and especially helped my public speaking (less F bomb fillers).
Even after that then moving to consulting and finding a specialty, I’d say it still took another year or two to get over the imposter syndrome - and generally gain my confidence back.
I went Military > 6 week break on terminal > started civilian job. I would say it took 6 months to settle in. Another 6 to really hit my stride. Everyone goes through this so don’t sweat it. Observe those around you, emulate the behaviors of those you want to be.
