What was the ONE thing that helped you the most in making your transition from accounting to another career? Was it a particular skill you unexpectedly leveraged, a connection you made, a course you took, or just plain grit? I'm looking for real, actionable advice to get me out of this cubicle! All I know is I'm done with spreadsheets and number crunching. My only other real interest is in hospitality, but I'm not sure how hard a pivot that is.. have others here made a drastic shift like that?

I work in hospitality too! Still in the accounting umbrella though. Honestly, for me, the single biggest thing was leveraging my analytical skills in a completely different way. As an accountant, I was trained to identify patterns, solve problems, and present complex information clearly. When I pivoted to project management in the hospitality industry, those skills were surprisingly invaluable. Sure, I had to learn the ins and outs of hotel operations and customer service, but my ability to analyze data, manage budgets, and communicate effectively with stakeholders gave me a huge advantage. There definitely were others that have made a drastic shift; accounting provides skills that can be used in different ways. So, don't underestimate the power of what you already know, and focus on how your accounting skills can translate into a hospitality setting.
