If full time it is not hourly, it is salaried. $98 to 100K
I mean, like any role, it’s a little bit of a sliding scale… But I generally agree with Editor 1’s floor at $50 hourly/$105k salary, assuming benefits and lower end of experience. My agency’s band for senior editors is 95-120k.
For freelance, we’re probably talking $65-80/hr.
Yes, second shift would be worth more to live off of of the standard 9 to 5 (ha ha) schedule.
And remember, if it’s freelance and you’re not going through a freelance agency, they aren’t paying 30% more for your benefits, you have to off of your net income.
would you be interested in a freelance editor role?
I know they used to pay $65 in 2011
$65 is pretty much our ceiling for hourly, not that I agree with that. I do know other agencies are out there paying more from what I’ve heard from my freelance friends. But not sure if that would be considered a higher level than senior editor.
For freelance, top rate for experienced senior editors has gone to $85/hr in NY.

I have sometimes told people $40 as my floor, but that's because I treat it as gravy on top of my FT job and I'm married. More reasonable floor is $50 or more.
Remote matters here. There are parts of the country where that's excellent money, but you're not likely to get NYers.

I make about a 30% more than $98K at my regular gig, but if we're talking moonlighting rates for remote editing, $50 as a floor is pretty normal.
You can break down the actual costs this way:
40 hours/week x 50 work weeks a year (even FL workers need vacation days) = 2000 hours
$100000 FT salary + about 33% additional in medical and 401(k) benefits = $133,000: remember, you have to pay for your own medical plan when you’re FL
$133,000 \ 2000 hours = $66.50/hour.
If you’re thinking “ but in this economy, I’d take an even lower salary,” remember that you have to pay more as a freelancer than the corporate giants pay in their wholesale bulk medical insurance deals, so stick with this floor.
