You pay it all back. That’s why they are a scam. The minute it hits your bank you’re basically in debt with the firm
Oh of course it’s not a true scam. It’s clear in the agreement. But it’s certainly a way to get leverage over you
Details on how to claim it in your taxes can be found here: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/what-is-the-irc-1341-repayment-credit-in-layman-s-terms/00/31751
Source - I had to pay back my firm when leaving and got most but not all of it back in my tax refund.
Thanks!
Pay it all back which blows
Most firms will allow a payment plan, currently paying back my last firm ~16k
Taxes were withheld on $10k that you made, but then had to pay back. Your tax documents are updated to reflect that you made $10k less.
Assuming that your withholding was perfectly dialed in for the rest of the year, you’ll get back the extra withholding. If you were over- or under-withholding during the year, then your refund will be higher/lower (respectively) than the $4k that was withheld from your signing bonus. Either way, yes, it’ll net out
Do they really claim it? Are you exiting to industry or other consulting?
