What’s reasonable to ask for in setting up my home office? I’m starting a new in house role that is permanently fully remote and I really don’t have a good office set up at home. I want to ask the company to send an electronic adjustable stand up desk, a new office chair, a printer/scanner, and a good headset for calls. This seems fair to me since they don’t have to provide me with office space. But I thought I’d ask the group. What have you asked for and received as far as working from home?

I’m also in a permanently remote in house counsel role! Just started a few months ago. I received two monitors, a docking station, a fancy keyboard (which I don’t care for), and a separate work phone. I can expense AirPods or some headset if I want. I’ll be moving sometime this year so I have not asked for a standing desk yet, but I can and will expense that as well. I don’t print much, and currently have a printer/scanner, but I think that would be completely reasonable request.

like

Ask your boss/colleagues! I started last month and didn’t ask, so I just got an older monitor, a laptop, a headset, an HDMI cable, keyboard and mouse. I didn’t ask and now feel uncomfortable asking for better/ other things

like

We got monitors, keyboard, camera, mouse, headset, and docking port from work and then $1000 to spend on ergonomic related items (desk, chair etc)

like

Oh wow that’s a lot. The job I interviewed for only provides for around $300

Thanks I didn’t even think about monitors but I will definitely need one! This is very helpful. It is so strange having to set up my own office and knowing that I won’t have a real office to go in to. My husband has worked fully remote for years and now I think we need a bigger house because we each need an office!

Just ask. Worst they can do is say no. For my (non permanent) remote work they had as options: docking station, two monitors, laptop, keyboard, mouse, fancy webcam, headset, office style phone you can connect through VOIP.

They specifically said no printer and no furniture (desk, chair, bookcase etc).

Also, not sure what exactly the tax rules are, but home office stuff can be tax deductible, so look into that if you buy stuff that can’t be expensed.

What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). What would be a typical salary for a junior in house counsel role (3 yoe) at a publicly traded company in a secondary market (think Austin, Tampa, Charlotte)? I’m having a really hard time finding what a reasonable range would be. Most positions I’m applying to require desired salary in the application, and the truth is I’d accept anything north of 125k but don’t want to undersell myself and take a bigger cut than necessary coming from biglaw.

When I moved in-house a year ago as a BigLaw mid-level, I took a 45% pay cut, far more than I was comfortable with (although I was fine with a 20-30% cut). I took the job because it was a great role and I was focused on making the jump in house and developing the skills I wanted, which required me moving away from my firm practice area. Now that my year-end review is coming up, how do I ask my company for a significant pay raise (not just a 2-5% inflation-matching raise)?
