Tax technology typically have different subgroups. Some are more on the data analytic side using tools like Alteryx and powe bi, etc.
Then there is the implementation group that help implementation software or process improvements for clients’ tax department, mostly in tax provisions.
We don’t need programming skills.
BDO has a great tax technology group if anyone is interested. Might be the only tax group with good wlb. This week has been my busiest week and I worked 49 hours. Typically I just hit the 40 to 42 mark and no one ever complains. Also the work is way more interesting than tax compliance.

Hey. Just make a post somewhere and ask for likes. That will usually get you enough likes to unlock the dm function.
I used to be in tax technology and honestly, I thought it was all over the place. Like they said above ^, there’s many different subgroups and specializations but I thought it pigeonholed you early in your career. You have to understand tax but you really don’t do it. You understand different tech implementation but it didn’t see a ton of value or future for me. In my opinion I would’ve just went to tech consulting. I would recommend working in a tax group a few years and then transfer over if you want to make it your career

Tax tech is all about finding and implementing tech based solutions for clients. You don’t need to be a programmer to be a part.
Is pay/opportunity within public better than compliance? My perspective so far has been straight compliance is easier to get to traditional partner track but tax tech is higher salary (below itax and M&A though). For industry: it seems like the big tech companies value it more than most traditional industry tax teams who seem to give it maybe zero premium.
Is that an accurate read? I've been debating about trying to switch to tax tech so I am looking for more perspective from those with experience.
