What’s the best time to transition from big law to F500 pubco if the goal is in house securities lawyer. And how can I maximize the chances of that

4-6 years. 7 or more is maybe okay but at that many years of experience, I either want you to have one in-house job under your belt or you’ll just get slotted into the same title and pay as someone coming in on the lower end because you’ll still need to be trained on how to function in house.

Depends OP, others can chime in but ime the number and length of meetings counter that to some extent, even if you can decline some and multitask for others which is the usual advice on here.

6-7 years

like

That's true for most corporate groups, but most of the "top" securities roles I see are almost entirely reserved for 6+ years. Not to say you can't try to move in sooner, but theres not many roles out there, especially if you're limiting to F500. Each company only has a few (like 1 or 2) securities lawyers.

4-6 years. If you try at 6+ you are more likely to be competing with people with in house experience who will be favored over someone coming from a firm.

like

4-5 years. That’s what I did

like

Depends on role. If its counsel level, probably 4-6 years. If its a senior counsel role, probably 8+ and preferably previous in house experience so...

like

So 4-5 years in BL and another 3-4 years in house?

like

When you say 4-6 years, is it 4-6th year associate or years of experience under your belt (so 5th-7th year associate)

I’m a 2019 grad and went in house at the end of 2023. So basically 4yoe for me.

Should I get an accountant/tax pro? I’m sick of paying for $200 for turbo tax and still having to do all the work. Do I move out? Can I start spending on myself? Am I missing anything from a saving perspective?

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.
