Lol way more selective thank IB or consulting. Most get kicked out
It’s really tough... VP hiring picked up the last 18 months or so because of recent fundraising (market high, greater allocation to private equity from other alternatives and public securities), but generally speaking there’s ~4 associates for every VP seat available. Like consulting a lot of people self-select out or aren’t a good fit for the job, but it’s still fiercely competitive - everybody who’s gunning for VP succeeded in banking or consulting and in their 2-3 year associate stint, and there just really aren’t any duds.
It becomes more of a linear, time and availability based progression afterwards, with 4-6 years each at VP and Principal before partner (larger firms may have an extra layer in there somewhere).
What about PE ops? Do people build a career there? Asking as an experienced ops person considering a VP role
Tougher. Only a handful of associates get invited to come back post business school for the VP role.
