Chief
Lie when you’re interviewing and they ask what your current comp is
Chief
I mean if the pay scale is public knowledge then yeah maybe don’t do that
Switch companies every 2-4 years
Change jobs every 2-3 years to optimise for Comp/Titles unless you are at MBB/firms where progression is quick.
At SM level and above its worth sticking around and sacrificing comp to get to partner. At SM more about support/network/sponsors
Always negotiate. Always.
I've jumped around quite a bit and I'd say if I hadnt done so my compensation wouldnt be where it is today.
Besides that, I'd say the other thing that's helped me progress is always keeping track of my accomplishments and making sure that I review them with my manager during my performance reviews and stress the value that I've brought to the team since joining the company.
Negotiate. Unless islts your first position, know your bottom number, add 20 to your top. Change jobs every 2-3 years.
IBM is known for fast promos, that's the fastest way to get more money (raises...not so much). In a high growth potential situation like that:
I have a big long document I keep running to log each achievement and positive slack message aligned to each firm performance assessment dimension. The second I get promoted, I start the next doc.
Log your praise and achievements early and often, and update your manager verbally with some of the stuff that goes in there.
I start asking for a promo 1 quarter before I actually think it's feasible, then when it doesn't go thru, there's pressure for the next cycle. (Quarterly cycles).
